This Week...

Bug fixes and more bug fixes. Umbrello, KDevelop, Quanta, Konsole, KOrganizer encoding, KSpread, Khtml, Juk, Kopete, Kgpg, KWin and kdeui all have a large number of bugs fixed.
There were a few announcements this week. Of course the big one is the release of 3.2 beta1. Look here for the packages. The bug statistics reflect not only the focus on fixing bugs, but new testers are finding bugs and reporting them.
Jeroen Wijnhout announced a new version of Kile, LaTeX source editor, TeX shell, and gnuplot frontend:
The Kile team is proud to announce that Kile 1.6 has (finally) been released!

Major improvements:
  • New editor part (katepart)
  • Project management (group files, let Kile detect the master document automatically, etc.)
Minor improvements (that are worth mentioning):
  • interaction with gBib and pyBliographer by emulating some LyX server commands
  • improved highlighting (math envs are highlighted)
  • more standard tools are configurable
  • auto-completion of LaTeX environments
  • statistics of the LaTeX doc (word count)
You can get the tarball from (which includes the full changelog kile-1.6/kile/Changelog):

Max Howell announced a new version of FileLight, described as follows:
Filelight uses an interesting nested pie-chart technique to represent filesytem disk usage. Its function is similar to du and the miriad of other diskspace visualisation tools, however due to its more advanced method of representing directory heirarchies it is often possible to use Filelight in unexpected ways. Browsing your home directory using Filelight is often an enlightening experience!

The easiest way to understand what Filelight does is to look at a screenshot, this is a good one:

This version is a slight revision to the recent 0.6.3 release, but with Welsh and German translations, some UI tweaks and some memory leak fixes thanks to Valgrind.

Filelight is also present in kde cvs, (currently in kdenonbeta).

I hope you enjoy using Filelight, and if you have any suggestions then I'd love to hear them :-) Thanks
Jaroslaw Staniek sent me some information on the progress of Kexi, a graphical database application:
Our first-plan development is really more in-depth:
  • Moving to a new DB API (it may be considered by some people as a candidate to the official KDE DB Api) - this is 90% of current development during last 2 months
  • Refactoring Kexi design and code, because new we are not using KOffice libs (see http://www.kexi-project.org/wiki/wiki/index.php?Kexi%27s%20Environment)
  • Making Kexi more easy to use and universal, simply moving away from being a frontend
This is issue 52 of the KDE-CVS-Digest. Hopefully it has been useful for those who want to follow the development of the project. I fully intend to continue producing the digests. I am also very aware of the shortcomings of this format. The development of a feature usually involves far more than one or two commits. It is difficult to highlight the methodical building of the necessary infrastructure that eventually becomes an application. And some readers are interested in a particular project within KDE. I intend to remedy these things in the months to come. And try to implement suggestions that I have received over the year. Thank you for all the encouragement that you have given.
