Diese Woche ...
Security fixes in URI handlers. KAddressbook now handles IM addresses. Kppp now can handle multiple modem configurations. KUser now can use LDAP, Samba and MD5 Shadow passwords.

Over the last few months there have been a number of commits to the aegypten branch by Marc Mutz. So I asked him to describe what he had been doing with the certmanager in KMail, and about his goals, and at what stage is the development. He responded generously:
This is all part of the Aegypten-2 Project. We removed the CryptPlug plugin layer that was separating KDE code from gpgme code. We instead made a gpgme++, which you can think of as C++ binding for the C-library gpgme. On top of that, we more or less directly put libkleopatra, which is a Job-based abstraction of both the gpgme-based as well as the traditional Kpgp crypto backends that also provides for async crypto operations, although we've not come around to using them in KMail yet. They're used in Kleopatra, though (which is the renamed KGpgCertManager).

The main goal is to enhance the usability of S/MIME for KMail and Kleopatra. We've also revamped most of the backend libraries to be more KDE-ish and C++-ish, as well as to join the code paths of kpgp and s/mime / gpgme code. We're almost complete now with what we can do in this project, and are about to merge back to HEAD.

Stanislav Karchebny announced a beta release of aKregator, an RSS aggregator:
aKregator 1.0-beta1 is released.

aKregator is KDE RSS aggregator with great look and feel.

Project homepage: http://akregator.upnet.ru/
Download URL: http://akregator.upnet.ru/akregator-1.0_beta1.tar.bz2
KDE Bugzilla product: akregator

This beta emphasizes on:
  • Multitabbed article viewer - click on a link within an article to open it in new tab.
  • Double click any article to open it externally in konqueror window.
  • Add feeds with ease - feed autodiscovery is supported (e.g. for LiveJournal.com - just enter something like http://livejournal.com/~username to have RSS feed found automagically).
  • Tries to keep usage patterns similar to kmail and konqueror to help learn quickly and use easily.

Please report any bugs you encounter to the KDE Bugzilla. Please keep in mind this is still beta release, and so bugfixing is in progress. When in doubt, please contact developers directly on irc.kde.org in channel #akregator. Some old bugs are still at http://berk.upnet.ru/projects/bugs and are being fixed atm.

  • I apologize for the delay in publishing this weeks Digest. Here is the story: The scripts depend on a local copy of the kde cvs repository. This copy is updated using cvsup from the cvsup.kde.org server. There were no new updates since the 14th, and being patient or distracted elsewhere I didn't notice till thursday that there was a problem. What happened was when the kde cvs server was rebuilt early last week, the ip address changed, which didn't agree with the firewall rules on the cvsup server. All is working now. Thanks to Michael Seiwert for responding and getting things working again.

You will notice a few bugs as you read further. For some reason the bug numbers aren't there in certain places, and the filenames are being truncated in odd ways. I'll fix them later this week.
