This Week...
KDevelop has a new QT Designer port. KStars adds support for Philips webcams. Two more icons sizes are added to Konqueror file mode. The PIM Kitchensync supports syncing Kolab, eGroupware and OPIE addressbooks. Crypto improvements in KMail KWin adds per window settings.

Rob Kaper announced an alpha version of Atlantik:
Atlantik 0.7.0 Alpha 1 has been released. Atlantik is a KDE client for playing Monopoly-like board games on the monopd network.

This release is a preview of the Atlantik that will ship with KDE 3.3. The stand-alone release was seperated from the "Kindergarten" KDE 3.3 alpha release to include fixes aimed at KDE 3.x compatibility and aims at giving KDE 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 users the ability to upgrade Atlantik without a complete KDE upgrade.

Amongst the new features are an event log, improved monopd protocol handling and estate names displayed on the board. The release furthermore includes all improvements from Atlantik 0.6.x (the KDE 3.2 version which never had a stand-alone release) including configurable token images, better KNotify support and various bugfixes.

Mark Kretschmann announced version 1.0-beta4 of the amaroK audio player:
This release will probably be the last release before the 1.0 final version.

  • CHG: Enhanced "Fill-Down" feature for track column (auto-increment) (BR 81194).
  • FIX: Closing xmms-visualizations freezes amaroK (BR 81326).
  • FIX: CollectionBrowser does not sort by tracknumber (BR 79600).
  • FIX: ContextBrowser's URLRequests need to be escaped.

For quite a while Albert Astals Cid has been editing the ui files (XML files generated by QT Designer) that get committed, with this comment:
Removing not needed accelerators (<property name="accel">) from ui files. That is good because:
  • Makes .ui files smaller
  • Removes not necessary setAccel( QKeySequence( ) ); from the generated *.cpp
  • Translations teams don't get the accelerator to translate as a separate entry making it unpossible to generate errors because the & is placed in a letter and the accelator entry is translated to another letter. (Examples about that in http://www.iespana.es/tsdgeos/accelerators.html)

David Faure commented on an edit to a ui file:
We really need a script that prepares .ui files for committing them. Not sure if we can do that at commit time (afaik we can only accept/reject, not modify the file at that point?), but at least a script to run before committing would help. It would remove captions and accels, and reset the min version. The problem is, how to know what the min version is ... needs a per-module (with possible per-subdir override maybe?) config file... or maybe a global file in CVSROOT associating each module (or module/subdir) with the min version. Albert, did you write a script for removing caption & accels automatically or did you do it by hand?

Albert Astals Cid responded:
I do it by hand as it needs some inteligence behind the process, i mean, some accels have been changed by the user (Help -> F1) so i keep them and some captions are actually used, so all i do is
  • grep -R "<property name=\"accel\">" introduction_new.txt introduction.txt statistics.txt for accels and
  • grep -R "setCaption( tr2i18n( \"" introduction_new.txt introduction.txt statistics.txt for captions quite rudimentary i know.

The discussion continued, with some problems in ui files highlighted.

David Faure:
Help->F1 is a bad example since we have KHelpMenu and KStdAction for such things. Did you actually see accels being set, that were different from the & character, and that were not bugs?

For captions: yes of course we shouldn't remove all captions, only those that look autogenerated - aren't those always like "Form1", "Form2", etc.?

Albert Astals Cid:
No, look at kbruch/src/taskvieweroptionsbase.ui for example, it's caption is TaskViewerOptionsBase

Some (at least one) files in kdevelop has Ctrl+<something> have a look at kdevelop/languages/python/app_templates/pyqt/templates-ui-mainwin

<accel>Alt-A</accel>, which completely breaks with translations: if the translation says "&Foo", it's still Alt-A that will be used as accel. So we need to remove <accel> tags.

<property name="menuText">
<string>&New</string>
</property>
<property name="accel">
<string>Ctrl+N</string>
</property>

David Faure:
Beeuuhh. We have KAction for this, why do people make menus by hand :(

Well. We can always check for Alt+<letter>, this should catch most cases...

That's equal to the classname, isn't it? A script could detect that.

I'll try to write something up, thanks for the feedback.

Boudewijn Rempt followed up with a question:
I'm learning something every day -- do I understand correctly that I shouldn't add accelerators to labels etc. in my .ui files? I've painstakingly done that to all Krita's new dialogs...

David Faure responded:
No no. "&" is fine. The problem is that when you do "&Add", Qt Designer stores <accel>Alt-A</accel>, which completely breaks with translations: if the translation says "&Foo", it's still Alt-A that will be used as accel. So we need to remove <accel> tags.

It has become clear that any bugs in KDE software have some hidden significance. In the interest of full disclosure, I want to inform you that any bugs in this issue, known or unknown have the purpose of demoralizing the Tampa Bay Lightning, messing with their minds, so they lose tonights game. Go Calgary.
